Part One. Introduction |
1. Chinese is a syllabic language, each word consisting of one or more short syllables. |

2. Most Chinese syllables are formed by a combination of the initials, finals and tones. For example, bɑ̀, mɑ̄, hɑ̌o. The consonant at the head of a syllable (b, m, h in the example) is called the initial. The rest of the syllable is the final.

3. The Chinese Putonghua has four basic tones. They are shown by the tone- marks: ˉ (the first tone), ˊ (the second tone), ˇ ( the third tone ), ˋ ( the forth tone ). |

4. We should pay attention to the note which is different tones may express different meaning. For example: bā: 八(eight); bá: 拔(pull); bǎ: 靶(target); bà: 爸(father). |
