- The use of “chú le” (除了) (except) has two different meanings in Chinese; that is “inclusion/addition” and “exclusion”. Therefore, we have to take extra care when using this word in order not to bring any ambiguous meaning.
- The first way to use “chú le” (除了) in Chinese is to add information. For example, “chú le kē xué，wǒ hɑ́i xǐ huɑn shù xué” (除了科學，我還喜歡數學). In this example, one wants to show that he/she likes not only Science, but also Mathematics. (Inclusion / addition)
- In contrast, the other way to use “除了” is totally different from the first one. For example, “chú le kē xué，wǒ shén me kē mù dōu xǐ huɑn” (除了科學，我什麼科目都喜歡) 。In this example, one wants to show that he/she likes all other subjects, except Science. It means that he/she doesn’t like Science at all. (Exclusion)
