Talking about ability 能和不能

There are some words to express the degree of an adverb. They are shown in the table below:
English
Chinese
Cantonese
Can
Cannot
不能

When we talk about someone’s abilities, we will use the word “nang4” (能) to express one can do something. On the contrary, we use the word “bat1 nang4” (不能) to express one cannot do something in one’s ability.

The question form: When we ask the questions about abilities, we will use the words “nang4”
(能) and “bat1 nang4” (不能) to form the question.

Question pattern: Subject + “nang4” (能) + verb + “maa1” (嗎)? Or Subject + “nang4 bat1 nang4” (能不能) + verb?

e.g.  Nei5 nang4 zou6 dou3 maa1?    Can you do it? 你能做到嗎?

Ngo5 nang4 zou6 dou3。     I can do it.     我能做到。

Ngo5 bat1 nang4 zou6 dou3。  I cannot do it.   我不能做到。
