Sentence Pattern: “Not only…but also”

When you want to add more information in a sentence, in English, we can use the pattern “Not only…but also…”. In Chinese, we have the same pattern as; it is “bat1 daan6 (不但)……，ji4 ce2 (而且)……”

1.她不但聰明，而且很用功讀書。 Taa1 bat1 daan6 cung1 ming4，ji4 ce2 han2 jung6 gung1 duk6 syu1 (讀書)。 She is not only clever, but also works very hard.

2.  他不但喜歡中文，而且喜歡音樂。 Taa1 bat1 daan6 hei2 fun1 zung1 man4 fo1，ji4 ce2 hei2 fun1 jam1 ngok6 fo1。 He likes not only Chinese, but also Music.

From the above examples, you can find that the Chinese sentence is more complicated than the  English one for adding information. We have to include a verb in the clause in Chinese. However, the verb can be omitted in English if the verb can be understood from  the previous sentence.

As in Example 2, the verb “hei2 fun1” (喜歡) has to be repeated in the second sentence
in Chinese. However, the verb is not necessary in the English one.
