1. Talking about something that you “need to” do: “要” yɑ̀o
In our daily lives, there are things that we must do, we need to do or we don’t have to do. It depends on its emergency. When we talk about something that we need to do, we will use” “yɑ̀o” in Chinese to express. The use of the word “要” in Chinese is similar to “need to” in English. It will be put after the subject and followed by the verb. Example: 我們要到美國領事館申請當地的旅遊簽證。 wǒ men yɑ̀o dɑ̀o měi guó lǐng shì guɑ̌n shēn qǐng dɑ̄ng dì de lǚ yóu qiɑ̄n zhèng。 We need to go to the Consulate General of the United States to apply for the visa. If we want to emphasis something that we must do, we will use the word “必須” to help us. In English, it is “must”. Example: 我們必須留意當地的天氣和要準備的用品。 wǒ men bì xū liú yì dɑ̄ng dì de tiɑ̄n qì hé yɑ̀o zhǔn bèi de yòng pǐn。 We must beware of the weather and the things that we have to bring along with.
