Telephone call
There are some expressions that you have to use in the telephone conversation:
At the very beginning of the telephone call, you may say “Hello! May I speak to … , please?” In Chinese, it is 你好! 請……聽電話。
(“nei5 hou2! ceng2 …… teng1 din6 waa2”.)

When someone is there, you may answer “Speaking. Who’s calling?” In Chinese, it is 我是。你是誰?
(“ngo5 si6. nei5 si6 seoi4?”)
If you are looking for the person to answer the call, you can say “Just a moment, please.” In Chinese it is 請等等
(“ceng2 dang2 dang2”).
If the person that you are calling is not at home, the person may say “He/ She is not here” or “He/She hasn’t come back yet” or “Please call later” or “Please leave a message”. In Chinese, they are 他/她 不在
(“taa1 bat1 joi6”)
or 他/她 還沒有回家
(“taa1 waan4 mut6 jau5 wui4 gaa1”̄)
or 請你遲一點再來電
(“ceng2 nei5 ci4 jat1 dim2 zoi3 loi4 din6”̀)
or
請你留言
(“ceng2 nei5 lau4 haa6 hau2 seon3”
)
When you have got a wrong number, the person may say “You’ve got a wrong number” or “Which number did you dial?” or “There’s no such person”. In Chinese, they are 你打錯電話了
(“nei5 daa2 co3 din6 waa2 liu5”)
or 你打的電話號碼是什 麼?
(“nei5 daa2 dik1 din6 waa2 hou6 maa5 si6 sam6 mo1”)
or 這兒沒有這個
(“ze2 ji4 mut6 jau5 ze2 go3 jan4”)。
